أناتول فرانس هو روائي وناقد فرنسي ولد في باريس في 16 أبريل 1844 لعائلة تعمل في الفلاحة وتوفي في 12 أكتوبر 1924. من رواياته "جريمة سلفستر بونار" و"الزنبقة الحمراء" و"تاييس" و"ثورة الملائكة" و"الآلهة عطشى". دخل في أكاديمية اللغة الفرنسية في 23 يناير 1869 متحصلا على المقعد 38. تحصل على جائزة نوبل في الأدب لسنة 1921 لمجموع أعماله.

كان أناتول فرانس — أحد أعلام الأدب الفرنسيِّ في القرن التاسع عشر — أديبًا من الطراز الرفيع؛ فمجموع ما تركه من مؤلفات وأعمال أدبية يكشف عن تحلِّيه بموسوعيَّة هائلة ضاهى بها مفكِّري عصره. وقد برز في كتاباته طابع فلسفيٌّ واجتماعيٌّ خاص، وروح حكيمة ومرحة في آنٍ واحد، فضلًا عن قدرته على سبر أغوار النفس البشرية، واستنطاق الطبيعة والكون بأسره. ولمَّا كان إعجاب عمر فاخوري بالأديب الفرنسيِّ عظيمًا، وكانت فجيعته في وفاته سنة ١٩٢٤م عظيمة هي الأخرى، فقد أراد أن يقدِّم لقراء العربيَّة قبسًا من أفكار أناتول وآرائه، بما تضمَّنته من قضايا النفوس والأرواح، والحياة والموت، والحقيقة والخرافة، والعلم والدين، والماضي والمستقبل، والتمدُّن والوحشيَّة، والحبِّ والغواية. إنه واحدٌ من الكتب التي تمتع القارئ وتحمله على الفكر والتفكُّر.
