فرج جبران: كاتِبٌ وصَحَافيٌّ ومُتَرجِم، كانَ يَعمَلُ مَوظَّفًا حُكُومِيًّا في دِيوانِ المُحاسَبةِ بالقاهِرة، ولكِنَّهُ كانَ يَهوَى الصَّحافةَ والأَدَب.
اشتَرَكَ فرج جبران في إِصْدارِ مَجلَّةِ «الشُّعلَة» معَ «محمد علي حماد»، واشترَكَ في تَحْريرِ «آخِر سَاعَة» مُنْذُ نَشْأتِها، وتَرجَمَ كَثِيرًا مِنَ القِصَصِ والرِّواياتِ عَنِ اللُّغَةِ الفَرَنسيَّة، ثُمَّ اتَّجهَ بعْدَ الحرْبِ العالَميَّةِ الثانِيةِ إِلى الرِّحلاتِ والكِتابةِ عَنِ الطَّرائِفِ والغَرائِبِ فِي البِلَادِ الَّتي يَزُورُها، حتَّى لقِيَ حَتْفَه فِي إِحْدى الطَّائِراتِ بعْدَ إِقْلاعِها مِن إيطاليا فِي طَرِيقِها إِلى القاهِرةِ عامَ ١٩٦٠م؛ حيْثُ اخْتَفتِ الطَّائِرةُ فوْقَ البَحْرِ الأَبْيضِ المُتوسِّطِ ولَمْ يُعثَرْ لَها أَوْ لِرُكَّابِها عَلى أَثَر.
تَرَكَ جبران مُؤلَّفاتٍ ومُترجَماتٍ عِدَّة، مِن بَيْنِها: «غَرَام المُلُوك»، و«تَعالَ مَعِي إِلى أُورُوبا»، و«ابْن بَطُّوطةِ الثَّانِي»، وغَيْرُها. وقَدْ كانَتْ وَظِيفتُه الحُكوميَّةُ تُلزِمُه بعَدمِ التَّوْقِيعِ باسْمِهِ فِي بَعْضِ الأَحْيان، فاخْتارَ لنَفسِهِ اسْمًا مُسْتعارًا هُوَ «فَجْر»؛ وهُوَ مُشتَقٌّ مِن اسْمِهِ الكامِل.

القِصَّةُ، قَصِيرةً كانَتْ أو طَوِيلة، هيَ فَنٌّ مِن فُنونِ كِتابَةِ الحَياة، و«أناتول فرانس» واحِدٌ مِمَّنْ كَتَبُوا عَنِ الحَياةِ والإنْسَانِ بِوَاقِعيَّةٍ مَمزُوجَةٍ بالسُّخرِية. وفِي هَذِهِ المَجمُوعَةِ مِن قِصَصِه القَصِيرة — الَّتِي جَمَعَها وتَرجَمَها إِلى اللُّغَةِ العَرَبيَّةِ «فرج جبران» — يَنْهَجُ أناتول فرانس نَهْجَيْنِ مُتَبايِنَيْن؛ فهوَ الرَّاوِي في القِصَّتَينِ الأُولَيَيْنِ «عُنْقود العِنَب» و«ذَات الثَّوْبِ الأَبْيض»، اللَّتَيْنِ يَعْلُو فِيهِما صَوتٌ قادِمٌ مِن زَمَنِ الطُّفُولَةِ والصِّبَا، ويَستَكشِفُ بَطَلَاهُما الفَتِيَّانِ الحَياةَ في أَكثَرِ صُوَرِها أَوَّليَّةً وغُمُوضًا، وفِي القِصَّتَينِ التَّالِيتَينِ «هَدِيَّة مَوْت» و«الإِيمَان» يَنسَلِخُ الرَّاوِي مِن جَسَدِ البَطَل؛ حَيثُ يَقِفُ مِنهُ عَلى مَسافَة، ويَبدَأُ في رَصْدِ الأَحْداثِ والِانفِعالاتِ الشُّعُورِيَّةِ بِعَدَسةٍ ذَكِيَّةٍ تَقتَرِبُ حِينًا فتَكشِفُ عَنِ التَّفاصِيل، بَلْ تَنْفُذُ أيضًا إِلى مَا وَرَاءَها، وتَبتَعِدُ حِينًا آخَرَ فَتُتِيحُ لِلنَّاظِرِ مِن خِلالِها قِرَاءَةَ المَشهَدِ بِكَامِلِه.
