أناتول فرانس هو روائي وناقد فرنسي ولد في باريس في 16 أبريل 1844 لعائلة تعمل في الفلاحة وتوفي في 12 أكتوبر 1924. من رواياته "جريمة سلفستر بونار" و"الزنبقة الحمراء" و"تاييس" و"ثورة الملائكة" و"الآلهة عطشى". دخل في أكاديمية اللغة الفرنسية في 23 يناير 1869 متحصلا على المقعد 38. تحصل على جائزة نوبل في الأدب لسنة 1921 لمجموع أعماله.

في فلورنسا بينما كان العاشقان على المائدة، قدم جاك لحبيبته تيريز ملعقة رسم ساعدها زنبقة حمراء هديَة اشتراها من محلَ لعرض التحَف، وعندما عادت تيريز إلى باريس من فلورنسا كانت تزين صدرها بزنبقة حمراء تلفت الأنظار بروعتها وجمالها، وذات يوم بينما كانت عائدة إلى بيتها بعد نهار حافل بالخيانة، شاهدت الخادمة قطرات من الدم على صدر سيدتها تيريز، وعندما بحثت عن السبب وجدته في الدبوس الحامل للزنبقة قد خدش جلدها وجرح صدرها وأسال تلك القطرات، ولذلك كان على كاتب القصة أن يختار لها هذا العنوان المناسب (الزنبقة الحمراء). هذا الكتاب رائعة الكاتب الفرنسي المعاصر العملاق أناتول فرانس الذي أراد أن يتفنَن بصيغها ويبدع بوصفها وإنشائها، فجاءت –كما شاء- رائعة الجمال، نادرة المثال، زنبقة حمراء رائعة كصاحبتها وحاملتها ولكنها غريبة عجيبة أيضاً، فهي لطيفة ناعمة أنيقة، وهي متوحشة خشنة نافرة في آن واحد.
تقرأ في هذا الكتاب صدق اللهجة وروعة التصوير وبراعة السرد وحسن الإنتقال وتسلسل الأحداث مع روعة التعبير وحلاوة البيان.
تيريز إمرأة جميلة غنية وهي زوجة الكونت مارتن بلام، وهي غنية جداً وجميلة وأنيقة، تتخذ لها عشيقاً، ثم ذخر وذخر وهي تخدم الجميع وتستهلك الجميع وأخيراً تنكشف الحقيقة وتظهر الخيانة وتكون الكارثة عبرة وموعظة للآخرين في عصرها وللأجيال في العصور القادمة.
