احتوى أدب أمريكا اللاتينية، في القرن التاسع عشر؛ حدودا أساسية واذا استثنينا الروائي البرازيلي ماشادو دي أسيس Machado de Assis (1839 – 1908) ، فنرى ان كتاب أمريكا اللاتينية في القرن التاسع عشر اما غير ناضجين، واما اشتتاقيين، ليحصلوا على اهتمام أولئك المتخصصين في النصوص، الأدبية للقارة. لم يكن هناك قصور، في الرومانتيكية، أو الواقعية، أو الطبيعية. أو البرناسية، أو الرمزية. إلا أن النموذج الأوربي حصل على اهتمام كبير، كما أن الحركة الكبرى The Great Movement وصلت متأخرة. بعدما تم إهمال الدوافع الإيحائية الأصيلة. وقد حدث فشل كبير. ويعزى هذا الفشل إلى عدم قدرة المؤلفين على استعمال الأساليب، والتطبيق، واللغة. حقا... كانت اللغة احدى الأسباب، الرئيسة، والمركزية. في قصور كتابات أمريكا اللاتينية. لقد ورثت اللغة من القوى الاستعمارية، المرفوضة. وكان على لغة أمريكا اللاتينية أن تجد – مثل إنكليزية الأدب الاسكتلندي – لنفسها طريقا آخر .. أو أن تحرر نفسها لأجل تحقيق، ما تؤمن به. وهذا لم يتم أساسا. لقد حاول العديد من الكتاب والمؤلفين، تحسس طريقهم؛ للوصول إلى لغة، أصيلة، يكتبون بها، لغة يحسون أنها لغتهم الخاصة. إلا أنهم لم يتمكنوا من الوصول لذلك. وإبراز المحاولات تلك التي نراها لدي شعراء رعاة البقر، الأرجنتينيين. ..... هذا الكتاب يقدم أبرز معالم هذا الأدب وأهم المجددين فيه، كما يدرس المراحل التاريخية التي مر بها أدب أمريكا اللاتينية بدءا من القرن التاسع عشر ووصولا إلى حاضرنا اليوم.
