منذ حوالي قرنين من الزمن بدأت في الغرب عملية علمية للبحث والاستقصاء عن شخص عيسى المسيح التاريخي، أي عيسى المسيح النبي الذي بعث في فلسطين في أوائل القرن الأول، ومحاولة التمييز بينه وبين مسيح بولس الذي آمنت به الكنيسة، وكان من جملة الرواد الأوائل في عملية البحث هذه الرئيس الأمريكي الثالث توماس جفرسون (1743-1826) الذي حاول تطهير الكتاب المقدس من مفهوم مسيح بولس الميثولوجي والإبقاء فقط على تعاليم عيسى المسيح التاريخي، ومنذ ذلك الوقت، وعلى مدى قرنين من الزمن، ورغم الكثير من العثرات، استجمعت عملية الاستقصاء هذه زخما في العقود الثلاثة الأخيرة من القرن العشرين على شكل أبحاث أكاديمية كثيرة ومستفيضة، وبنتيجتها ظهرت على الملأ كمية لا يستهان بها من الكتابات الأكاديمية القيمة الحديثة أبرزت بشكل واضح وجود فجوة هائلة بين مسيح بولس الميثولوجي وبين عيسى المسيح التاريخي، ولكن بحسب قول أحد الباحثين الغربيين في هذا المجال: ( إن المتشددين المسيحيين –سواء الكاثوليك منهم أو البروتستانت- لشدة توقهم الحفاظ على معتقداتهم بلا تغيير ، لا يجرؤون على مواجهة النتائج التي تمخضت عنها مئتا عام من البحث العلمي في الكتاب المقدس). وفي الفصول التالية يبين الكاتب أن الإسلام سبق علماء الكتاب المقدس بأكثر من اثني عشر قرنا في إنكاره شخصية ''كريستوس'' الميثولوجية التي تخيلها بولس في المسيح، وبإعلانه على الملأ شخصية المسيح من التشويه الذي لحق برسالته، وبين المغزى والهدف الحقيقي منها، وهو ما اختارت الكنيسة تجاهله.
