إن "الفندق" كما هو معروف عند العرب أو pandocheion باليونانية أو fundicium أو fondaco باللاتينية كان واسع الانتشار في الفضاء المتوسطي منذ ما يناهز ألفي سنة. لم تكن هذه المؤسسات مأوى التجار والمسافرين فقط، بل كانت تعمل كذلك كحانات وأسواق ومخازن ومقرات للتعشير والتنظيم التجاري. تابعت Remie Constable في هذه الدراسة الأصيلة التطور المعقد الذي شهده هذا الصنف من المؤسسات ابتداء من صورته اليونانية pandocheion في العصر القديم المتأخر إلى أن ظهر ''الفندق" على امتداد البحر الأبيض المتوسط الإسلامي في خط مواز لازدهار الإسلام. وقد تابع "الفندق" تطوره مع مستهل القرن الثاني عشر ونزوح التجار الأوروبيين إلى الأسواق الإسلامية وتحول إلى ما يعرف باللاتينية fondaco. سهلت هذ المستوطنات التجارية التجارة والتنقل بين المناطق الإسلامية والمسيحية. وقبل مرور وقت طويل ظهرت الفنادق المعروفة باسم fondaco في مدن جنوب أوروبا أيضا. تبرهن هذه الدراسة التي رصدت انتشار هذا الصنف من المؤسسات على امتداد البحر المتوسط على وجود مصالح اقتصادية مشتركة كما تبرهن على وجود تواصل ثقافي متبادل على امتداد البحر العالم المتوسطي، وبذلك قدمت مساهمة باهرة تساعدنا على فهم هذه المنطقة.
