تعود فكرة زيارة العلامة سكيرج لمنطقة سوس إلى حدود عام 1345 هـ - 1926 م، أي قبل تاريخ الرحلة بإحدى عشرة سنة، وذلك عند استقباله بمنزله بمدينة الجديدة جماعة من كبار علماء هذه المنطقة، في مقدمتهم العلامة الأديب الكبير سيدي الطاهر بن محمد التمانرتي الإفراني السوسي، الذي كانت تجمعه به صداقة متينة منذ سنوات عديدة من التاريخ المذكور ، ولا ننسى في هذا الإطار أيضا العلامة سيدي أحمد بن علي الكشطي التناني، فقد كانت تربطه بالعلامة سكيرج علاقة حميمية قوية، وكان لا يخاطبه في رسائله إلا باسم شيخي، وأبي، وسندي، وعمدتي، وما إلى ذلك من هذه الألفاظ .... بمجرد انطلاق هذه الرحلة بدأ العلامة سكيرج في تدوينها وتسجيل أحداثها، وذلك ضمن أوراق كان قد اصطحبها معه للغرض ذاته، وقد وقفت عليها بالخزانة السكيرجية، غير أنها مبعثرة هنا وهناك ومعظمها مكتوب على وجه السرعة دون ترتيب أو تقييد بنظام الأسطر، بل كان يكتب فيها حسب ما تيسر له سواء من أعلى الصفحة أو على يمينها أو في الهامش وغيره، وهو نفس الأسلوب الذي اتبعه المؤلف في رحلاته السابقة، كالرحلة الزيدانية والوهرانية والحجازية. وعموما فقد كان يسجل وقائع هذه الرحلة تلقائيا وارتجالا، غير أن هذا لا يمنع من كونه أخضعها بعد ذلك إلى التقيح والتنظيم إلى أن أصبحت في حلتها التي هي عليه الآن.
