في هذا الكتاب يدرس الدكتور حمادي السايح المنهج التاريخي عند البيروني على إعتبار: أن (البيروني) في منهجه يكون قد زاوج بين الإستقراء والإستنباط، بعد أن اعتبر الشك منطلقاً أساسياً، وهو أمر لم تألفه الكتابة التاريخية قبله وأثناء عصره على الأقل، مما جعلت منه أحد المنظرين في علم التاريخ.
ولمعرفة كيف فهم البيروني الطريقة العلمية للدراسات التاريخية، ومنها الروح العلمية والموضوعية والتفهم النقدي للمعلومات والمصادر ومقارنة أحدها مع الآخر، وترجيح الشك على اليقين؛ وزّع المؤلف مباحث الكتاب على ثلاثة فصول تتبعَّ في (الفصل الأول) مسار الفكرة التاريخية إبتداءً من العصر الجاهلي إلى غاية القرن الرابع الهجري أي عصر البيروني، وأهمها الوقوف على ما استحدثه البيروني في حقل الكتابة التاريخية، والغرض من ذلك كله تيسير المقارنة بين ما أحدثه البيروني وما حكم الكتابة التاريخية قبله.
أما (الفصل الثاني) فكان بعنوان: البيروني والتطوير، ويكشف هذا الفصل عن رؤية جديدة يرتقي بها منهج البيروني من مجرد أخبار ماضية إلى وقائع تجعلها قابلة للدراسة العلمية شأنها في ذلك شأن الظواهر الطبيعية.
ويأتي (الفصل الثالث) بعنوان: البيروني والتنظير المنهجي، ويقف هذا الفصل على القفزة النوعية التي أحدثها البيروني في حقل الكتابة التاريخية والتي تتمثل أساساً في نقد المنهج الكلاسيكي.
في ضوء رؤية جديدة تطرح بديلاً يتم بموجبه قطع الصلة مع (المقاربة السندية) التي طُبقت في حقل الدراسات التاريخية التي كانت تحكم الحديث مستندة في ذلك على النقل.
وهذا يعني أن (البيروني) ليس ممن يكتفون بالنقل، فإثبات الحقيقة هدفه والدليل اليقيني مسعاه، قال عن نفسه: "لم أسلك فيه مسلك من تقدمني... وإنما فعلت ما هو واجب على كل إنسان أن يعمله في صناعته من تقبل إجتهاد من تقدموه بالمنّة وتصحيح خلل إن عثر عليه". وعليه يصبح التاريخ ليس نقلاً عند البيروني إنما هو نقد وعقل وحكمة.
