الكابوس الذي يخيفك لن يأتي، فقد أتى بالفعل! يكفي أن تخفض زاوية نظرك قليلًا فتراه تحت جلد الحياة اليومية يختبئ بكل ملامحه خلف تفاصيلها المبتذلة. تلك التفاصيل التي تذهب في ساقيتها بطوع إرادتك كي تحتمل تلك الرؤيا الأخرى الأبوكاليبتية. كأن الحياة نحياها في مستويين؛ مستوى للوعي الخامل عند معامل انحرافه الصفري، ومستوى آخر تنظر منه من خلال جروح الوعي فترى الجحيم قائماً. هكذا يقول لنا عطارد ... وعطارد هو أقرب الكواكب للشمس، وهو أكثرها حرارةً. هو قطعة من الجحيم بمعاييرنا الأرضية. وهو أيضاً ضابط ممن شهدوا اندحار الشرطة في 28 يناير 2011. بعد عقد وعدة أعوام من تلك الأحداث، مصر تحت احتلال غامض وفلول الشرطة القديمة تتولى قيادة المقاومة الشعبية بين الأطلال المحطمة للقاهرة. جحيم يومي من القتل العشوائي، يكثّف ما شاهدناه من مجازر متفرقة تلت أحداث يناير الشهيرة. هي خيالات وهواجس "الثورة المضادة" وقد صارت واقعاً في مستقبل كابوسي .
بعد "كوكب عنبر" و"عام التنين" يواصل محمد ربيع في "عطارد" ما بدأه في روايته الثانية تحديداً من فانتازيا سياسية تقارب اليوتوبيا المقلوبة "الديستوبيا" هذه المرة، في سرد يكتم الأنفاس يتنقل بين عوالم مستقبلية شديدة الاعتام، وماض كان مسكونًا دائمًا بذلك الجحيم.
