في جوء من الحروب والتمردات تدور أحداث هذه الرواية التي يعيش بطلها الضابط بترو أندرفتش على حافة الموت كل لحظة، ولكنه يندفع في مغامرات هو جاء مدفوعاً بروح إنسانية، وبحبّ تختلط فيه العاطفة تجاه حبيبته، بالمسؤولية عن فتاة قُتِل والديها على نحو مفجع، ونغّص عليها حياتها ضابط انتقل إلى صفوف المتمردين وراح يسعى وراءها.
تقدّم لنا هذه الرواية صورة عن مرحلة من تاريخ روسيا، إضافة إلى تصوير شاعر للطبيعة ولطبائع الناس.
