يقول الدكتور زكي نجيب محمود في إحدى مقالاته التي ضمها هذا الكتاب، وذلك في معرض نقده للسينما المصرية: "وإني لأشهد الله أني ما عدت من هذه الأفلام العربية ليلاً، غلا في ضيق النفس بما قد رأيت، آسفاً لهذه الهاوية التي نعيش في ظلماتها فناً وذوقاً وتمثيلاً وإخراجاً، ثائراً على أدبائنا الذين غضوا أنظارهم عن هذه الصفحة البيضاء التي فتحت لهم صدرها رحباً ليملاًوها بنتاج أقلامهم؛ غضوا عنها أنظارهم، فانتهبها أصحاب الأذواق الفجة السقيمة، التي لا تميز بين طيب وخبيث؛ أستغفر الله، بل لعلها تميز بين الطيب والخبيث تميزاً تستطيع به أن تمحو الطيب كله وأ، تثبت الخبيث كله... ولكن فيم هذا اللوم كله والنقد كله؟ إنما ينصرف اللوم إلى أدبائنا الذين جنوا على أدبهم وعلى الناس جناية كبرى، إذ تركوا ميدان الشاشة السينمائية لسواهم من غير ذوي الفهم الأدبي والذوق الفني..".
بمثل هذه اللهجة يتوجه الدكتور زكي نجيب محمود بنقده إلى طبقة الأدباء والمفكرين والمثقفين، ولمثل هذه التجاوزات الاجتماعية يسطر الكاتب مقالاته النقدية التي هي بحث كما كانت متميزة في عصره، هي كذلك الآن، فما زال عالمنا العربي يرزح تحت الكثير من النقائص والزلات التي استعرضها كاتب هذه المقالات في نقدياته. وقد شملت تلك المقالات مواضيع مختلفة: اجتماعية، اقتصادية، سياسية، ثقافية، أدبية، فكرية. وهي على الرغم من سمتها النقدية إلا أنها حفلت بتأنق أدبي تعبيري فكري وفلسفي متميز، كما أنها لامست معاناة الإنسان العربي في عمقها إلى أبعد حدود.
