"إن الفكر القومي العربي شأنه شأن أيّ فكر، هو حصيلة صيرورة الأفكار المرتكزة على المبادئ الأولية للقومية العربية، في جدلها مع "مشكلات" الواقع العربي، لا الواقع العربي نفسه؛ لكنّه في الوقت الذي يسعى إلى توصيف هذه "المشكلات"، فإنه يسعى في الآن نفسه إلى حلّها، وهذا ما يلقيه إلى مصافي الأيديولوجيا.
يحاول المؤلف في كتابه البحث عن نقد داخلي في فكرة القومية العربية ضمن ما يعتبره صيرورة ثقافية مع تصاعد الدعوات للمراجعة الذاتية.
تمحور الكتاب حول إشكاليتين رئيسيتين، الأولى تتساءل إذا ما كان الفكر القومي العربي قد أجرى نقدا داخليا استطاع من خلاله مواكبة مشكلات الواقع العربي على مدار القرن الفائت، والثانية تفحص إمكاناته عبر إنتاجه المعاصر بتشيير مشروع سياسي اجتماعي جديد يعيد التفكير بقضيته المتمثلة ببناء أمة حديثة.
وقسم المؤلف فصول الكتاب لبحث هذه التساؤلات وما يندرج تحتها إلى خمسة فصول ناقش فيها أفكار القومية العربية من خلال أربعة شخصيات في الفكر القومي وهي: محمد عزة دروزة، ونديم البيطار، وقسطنطين زريق، وعزمي بشارة.
