يتناول هذا الكتاب قضيَة كبرى لطالما شغلت الفكر العربي والإسلامي المعاصر، هي إشكالية "الدين والهوية"، وذلك بالنظر إليها من مداخل متعدَدة:
أولها المشألة الدينية –السياسية وأثرها في تشكيل الهوية الثقافية وفي مسائل الشرعية والأيديولوجيا. فإن السيد ولد أباه يرى أن الخطأ الجلل الذي تقع فيه أغلب اتَجاهات الفكر الإسلامي، هو محاولة أسلمة الدولة الوطنية الحديثة من دون الوعي بأنها تستبطن الوظائف العمومية التقليدية للدين.
المدخل الثاني يتمثُل في سؤال الكونية والإختلاف واستتباعه على مستوى النظرة إلى الذات وإلى الاخر. حيث يعرض الكاتب للمواقف من الحداثة ومن العولمة، لا سيَما في السياق العربي الإسلامي، مشيراً إلى أن نهج الخطاب العربي السائد حاليَا يميل، إمَا إلى إختزال العولمة في واقع الهيمنة الأمريكية أو ما يدعى بالنظام العالمي الجديد، وإمَا إلى إعطائها هالة نموذج حضاري جاهز للتصدير؛ مما ينَم عن قصور فادح من إستكناه تحولات نوعية تطال البشرية برمتها، وتستهدفها بمقوماتها الأنطولوجية والمعرفية والسلوكية.
وأمَا المدخل الثالث فمن باب الإسلاموفوبيا الجديدة، ورهاناتها الفكرية والإستراتيجية، ومقومات الحوار الديني؛ حيث إن ولد أباه يذهب إلى أن الإسلاموفوبيا نزعة عنصرية لا فكرية، فإنه يؤكد أنه من الجلَي أنَ الإسلاموفوبيا العنصرية الجديدة المتناميَة في أوروبا تندرج في سياق تنامي النزعات القومية المتطرفة، التي تعزَز حضورها ونفوذها في أغلب البلدان الأوروبية في السنوات الأخيرة. ويذهب الكاتب فيما يتعلَق بالحوار بين الإسلام والغرب إلى أن إشكالات الحوار الإسلامي –المسيحي ليست لاهوتية، حتى ولو أنَ من حقَ رجال الدين الخوض في هذه المسائل. لذلك فإن ولد أباه، وإذ يلاحظ أن ثمة عوامل كثيرة تبرز، بل تحتَم إطلاق فكرة الحوار الديني الذي يتطلب بنظره لكي يكون ناجعاً ومثمراً إخراجه من الحوارات الميتافيزيقية والكلاميَة إلى إشكالات ومقتضيات التعايش والتعاون، فإنه يدعو إلى نمط من "الدبلوماسية الدينية" بدل الحوار العقدي اللاهوتي، ويعني بذلك توجيه النظر إلى دور الدين إنتماءً وثقافة ً في السياقات الإستراتيجية والسياسية الدولية.
