لاتزال فلسفة الدِّين الجانب الأقل حضوراً في المباحث الفلسفية العربية رغم مركزيتها في تاريخ الفكر الفلسفي الذي تمحور تاريخيًا في علاقة متعددة الأبعاد بالدين. فإذا كانت الفلسفة اليونانية في جوهرها عقلنة للأسطورة اليونانية، فإن الفلسفة الحديثة هي نمط من علمنة اللاهوت المسيحي، في حين تشكل اللاهوت الوسيط من خلال امتزاج التقاليد التأويلية للنص بالموروث اليوناني مما كان لفلاسفة الإسلام ومتكلميه دور محوري فيه.
يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تلمس العلاقة الإشكالية الثرية بين الدِّين والسياسة والأخلاق من منظور فلسفي بالوقوف على محاور أربعة رئيسية هي: موضوع الشرعية في مقوماته السياسية والمجتمعية، مسألة القيم في متعلقاتها الأخلاقية الفردية والعمومية المشتركة، نظرية الاعتقاد من حيث إمكانات القول الفلسفي في الإيمان الديني، الدِّين في علاقته بالحداثة السياسية والاجتماعية الراهنة.
في الكتاب محاولات فلسفية لقراءة النص الكلامي والأصولي، وفيه استعراض لجوانب هامة من الفكر الفلسفي المعاصر لم تنل الاهتمام المستحق في الكتابات العربية مثل أدبيات حنة أرنت وليو شتراوس وكارل شميت، تندرج بكاملها في إشكالية العلاقة الثلاثية بين الدِّين والسياسة والأخلاق التي هي الإشكالية الراهنة المتجددة للفكر العربي.
