لم تشغل الفكر الانساني قضية مثلما شغلته
قضية العقل (نشأته ومصدره و آليته)، باعتباره
السمة المميزة للجنس البشري.
ومنذ عقود قليلة، تمكن العلم - باستخدام
تقنيات التصوير الحديثة-
من رصد المخ وهو يمارس نشاطاته،
لأول مرة في تاريخ البشرية.
لقد دفعت هذه التقنيات بعلم النفس المعرفي

خطوات هائلة الى الامام في البحث عن العلاقة بين المخ كعضو مادي،
وبين العقل والذات الانسانية كنشاطات غير مادية مميزة للانسان.
بهذه الخطوات، صار علو البيولوجيا العصبية، من خلال دراسته
لمراكز المخ ودوائره الكهربائية العصبية وناقلاته الكيميائية،
هو الحكم الذي يعول على كلمته عند الحديث عن معضلة العقل.
وتتأرجح النظرة الى العلاقة بين المخ والعقل بين طرفي نقيض،
نظرة مغرقة في ماديتها، ترى أن المخ يفرز العقل كما تفرز الكلى البول!
ونظرة أخرى تدخل بالعقل الى فضاء الميتافيزيقا،
وتعتبره نشاطا غيبيا لا دور للمخ فيه.
ويقوم هذا الكتاب بالبحث عن موضع الحقيقة بين
هذين الطرفين.
ولمعالجة هذا الموضوع، يبدأ الكتاب بطرح بنية المخ
وآليات قيامه بوظائفه، ثم يدلف الى دراسة ما يميز الانسان
عما سواه من الكائنات من ملكات عقلية، والطريقة
التي يمارس بها المخ هذه الملكات وكيفية نشأتها في الانسان.
ولا تكتمل النظرة الى العقل الانساني دون تحليل لدوره
في المشاعر الروحية والدينية، هذا الدور
الذي أدى حديثا الى نشأه علم البيولوجيا
