بعد مقتل تشي غيفارا، اعتقلت السلطات البوليفية الكاتب والمناضل الفرنسي ريجيس دوبريه، وحكمت عليه بالسجن لمدة ثلاثين عاماً، ولكن انقلاباً حدث عام 1970 خفف عن دوبريه تعود الزنزانة في "كامبري"، فسمح له بأن يقرأ ويكتب، قبل أن يؤدي تدخل الحكومة الفرنسية إلى إطلاق سراحه وهذا الكتاب هو ثرة أفكاره وتأملاته في السجن، وفي كثير من المقاطع يخاطب الكاتب نفسه متحدثاً عن كثير من هموم المناضلين والمثقفين، ويقوم بنوع من النقد الذاتي، من غير أن ينسى أنه ينتمي في أصله إلى "البورجوازية الصغيرة".
