روائي تركي فاز بجائزة نوبل للأداب، لعام 2006.
من مواليد إسطنبول في 7 يونيو عام 1952 وهو ينتمي لأسرة تركية مثقفة.
درس العمارة والصحافة قبل أن يتجه الي الأدب والكتابة كما يعد أحد أهم الكتاب المعاصرين في تركيا وترجمت اعماله الي 34 لغة حتي الآن، ويقرأه الناس في أكثر من 100 دولة.
في فبراير 2003 صرح باموق لمجلة سويسرية بأن "مليون أرمني و30 ألف كردي قتلوا على هذه الأرض، لكن لا أحد غيري يجرؤ على قول ذلك".
تمت ملاحقته قضائيا أمام القضاء التركي بسبب "إهانة الهوية التركية"،ولشخصية شبه مقدسة عند الأتراك وهي شخصية (مصطفى كمال أتاتورك) وهما جريمتين يعاقب عليهما القانون بحسب الفقرة 301, وقد عفى من الملاحقة القضائية أخيرا في نهاية 2006.
اختير كعضو في لجنة تحكيم مهرجان كان السينمائي لعام 2007.

لا تشكل إشكالات الحياة في الريف موضوع مؤلفات المؤلف القصصية، إذ كان ينزع الى السرد بحثاً عن هوية شخوصه، وذلك في إطار الحياة الاجتماعية والتاريخية لبلده تركيا، فأفرط باستثمار القضايا المرتبطة بالنوع القصصي في بنائه السردي. وفي هذا البحث عن الهوية- وهي هوية لا صلة لها بالهوية الوجودية- التي تناولها الكاتب عبر سرد مثير للشجن، فاختلطت في هذا السرد التفاصيل التاريخية برؤى تخطف الأبصار، حيث يمكن قراءة ما بين السطور التحولات المثيرة لقلق بلد تجاوزه التاريخ. يرمز الإنسان الفرد عند المؤلف لثورة تركيا وتمردها حيال الغرب، وهذا التمرد أصيل إذا ما عدنا الى أصوله الخاصة، وذلكم هو مفهوم الكاتب، الذي اكتشف ثقافته الغزيرة الباهرة، إزاء ماض أصيل مغرق العراقة. والكاتب لا يتردد في اختيار مختلف وسائل الكتابة مثل لصق الحكايا التاريخية أو الأسطورية سواء أكانت تلك الملح المستعارة من النصوص القديمة أم تلك النوادر وليدة خياله الخارق.
أورهان باموق: ولد هذا الروائي عام 1952 في استنبول، منحته الصحيفة التركية اليومية ميليت جائزة الرواية عام 1979 على إثر إصدار روايته الأولى (العتمة والضوء). وفي عام 1982 فازت روايته (جودت بيه وأولاده) بجائزة الروائي أورهان كمال.
