أناتول فرانس هو روائي وناقد فرنسي ولد في باريس في 16 أبريل 1844 لعائلة تعمل في الفلاحة وتوفي في 12 أكتوبر 1924. من رواياته "جريمة سلفستر بونار" و"الزنبقة الحمراء" و"تاييس" و"ثورة الملائكة" و"الآلهة عطشى". دخل في أكاديمية اللغة الفرنسية في 23 يناير 1869 متحصلا على المقعد 38. تحصل على جائزة نوبل في الأدب لسنة 1921 لمجموع أعماله.

"تاييس" رائعة الروائي الفرنسي الأكثر شهرة "أناتول فرانس" وفي هذا العمل يضعنا الروائي أمام إشكالية الحب والدين، هل يتناقضان أم يتلازمان، وهل يلغي أحدهما الآخر؟
تحكي الرواية قصة "تاييس" فاتنة الاسكندرية، ونجمة المسرح الروماني في القرن الرابع الميلادي، ووصول الراهب "بافنوس" إلى المدينة ومحاولته إقناعها بالإبتعاد عن حياة اللهو والمجون والاعتزال عن عملها، والسبب هو حرصه عليها وافتتانه بجمالها وحسرته على هذا الجمال الذي سينتهي إلى الزوال ما لم يمتزج بالحب الإلهي المتسامي.
وعلى هذا يبني الراهب "بافنوس" خطة لإنقاذ "تاييس" وهو في طريقه إلى إقناعها يقع في حبها، فيبدأ الصراع داخله ما بين الرغبة والحب والانعتاق، فهذا الراهب المتسربل بالوصايا والقيم الدينية التي تمنع الخطيئة، يشتعل حباً بههذ الفاتنة، فهل يستطيع النجاح والتوفيق ما بين نداء الغاية المتسامية، ونداء الرغبة...
يكتشف الراهب أخيراً حقيقة هامة، وهي أن الجمال لا بد أن يعيش لحظته وأن يستمتع بها ",,, لقد فكرت في الله، وفي خلاص نفسي، وفي الحياة الأبدية، كأنما كل هذه تعد شيئاً مذكوراً جنب رؤية تاييس، كيف لم أدرك أن السعادة الأبدية إنما هي في قبلة واحدة من قبلاتها. وأن الحياة بدونها لا معنى لها وليست سوى حلم مزعج...".
