لم يكن هاشيك بوهيمياً حقيقياًفحسب بل كات بالفطرة ميالاً إلى الخداع. وقد تزايدت نشاطاته الفوضوية. فأصبح محرراً في صحيفة فوضوية مما أدى إلى المزيد من الاحتكاك مع رجال الأمن. وقد أفاد مخبرو الشرطة النمساوية أنه كان خطراً على نحو خاص. في سجنه لم ينس حبيبته بارميلا، بل راح يرسل لها قصائد الحب. وكي لا يفقد حبيبته، قلت صداماته مع الشرطة وبدأ يمارس الكتابة للحصول على عمل ينهي حياة التشرد والسكر التي كان يجيدها. كان مضطراً إلى إعالة زوجته. وهذا ما دفعه إلى كتابة روايته الأولى الجندي الطيب شفيك . لم يستطع إيجاد ناشر يتحمس لها. ونتيجة لذلك اضطر هاشيك إاى نشرها على نفقته وتوزيعها بمساعدة صديقة. وقد نال نجاحاً جيداً أتاح له العثور على ناشر لأعماله.
