في سجنه لم ينسَ حبيبته بارميلا، بل راح يرسل لها قصائد الحب، وكي لا يفقد حبيبته، قلت صداماته مع الشرطة وبدأ يمارس الكتابة للحصول على عمل ينهي حياة التشرد والسكر التي كان يجيدها، كان مضطراً إلى إعالة زوجته، وهذا ما دفعه إلى كتابة روايته الأولى "الجندي الطيب شفيك".
لم يستطيع إيجاد ناشر يتحمس لها، ونتيجة لذلك اضطر هاشيك إلى نشرها على نفقته وتوزيعها بمساعدة صديقة، وقد نال نجاحاً جيداً أتاح له العثور على ناشر لأعماله.
