يمكن القول إن المأمون ونظام الملك فعلا مع المعتزلة والأشعرية ما فعله الإمبراطور البيزنطي قسطنطين مع "الأثناسيوسية" بعد صراعات طويلة مع "الآريوسية" أو غيرها؛ أي "تأميم المذهب" ليكون هو المرجعية التي تمنع التفكك الاجتماعي.
لم يكن التحول مجرد انتقال من "رأي إلى رأي"، بل كان "هندسة اجتماعية" لإعادة تشكيل عقلية المجتمع بعد فترة حكم طويلة للباطنية الإسماعيلية.
