رسالة تبحث في تاريخ أهل الاعتزال وعقائدهم، قدمها مؤلفها إلى دائرة التاريخ العربي في كلية الآداب والعلوم بجامعة بيروت الأميركية ونال عليها رتبة أستاذ في العلوم.
المعتزلة أكبر مدرسة فكرية عرفها الإسلام، ظهرت في أواخر العصر الأموي، وبلغت أوجها في زمن الخليفة العباسي المأمون وخليفته المعتصم والواثق الذين اعتنقوا مبادئها ودافعوا عنها وحاولوا نشرها. جاء ظهورها نتيجة الإطلاع على ما ترجم إلى العربية من فلسفة اليونان.
دافع المعتزلة عن العدالة الإلهية، وقالوا بحرية الفرد في اختيار أفعاله، وبحرية الرأي، ومما يؤسف له أنهم حاولا في أيام قوتهم أن يفرضوا أحوالهم على الناس بالقوة فخالفوا مبدأهم في حرية الرأي، وأدى ذلك إلى تنكر الناس لهم، وانقضاضهم عنهم، وأخيراً إلى سقوطهم، ومع ذلك فقد تركوا أثراً عميقاً في تطور الفكر الإسلامي، وخصوصاً في ظهور الأشعرية مدرسة الكلام التي حلتا محل الاعتزال بين أهل السنة وفي زيادة إقبال المسلمين على دراسة علوم اليونان وفلسفاتهم.
