لطالما مثل المعتزلة نموذجا من نماذج الفرق الإسلامية التي صاحبها دوما الجدل والنقاش التاريخي والكلامي منذ نشأتها وحتى عصرنا هذا. اذ على الرغم من بكور ولادة مقولاتها الكلامية وجدالاتها العقدية الا ان مراحل تطور معمارها العقدي ظل يساهم في تبلور بنيان الفكر الاعتزالي في صورة النهائية وحتى لحظة بروز الكلام الاشعري ونمو الجدل بينهما.
تأتي هذه الدراسة المهة في طبعتها المزيدة والمنقحة عن أطروحة الماجستير الأولى للمؤلف ليظهر من خلالها الباحث الدور السياسي الذي لعبه المعتزلة في تاريخ المسلمين من الوجهتين النظرية العملية والذي يراهم المؤلف انهم كانوا ايجابيين من حيث عدم فصلهم بين النظرية والتطبيق مع الإقرار بوجود أخطاء في التطبيق لكنها وفق نظر الكاتب لم تكن لتهدر فضائل المعتزلة ودورهم في حركة وحياة المسلمين، مما يستدعي نظرة عادلة ومتوازنة وموضوعية في التقييم.
يرى المؤلف أيضا ان التاريخ السياسي للمعتزلة لم يمت بخفوت نجمهم مع الكلام الاشعري وسجالاته انما ظل اثره باقيا من خلال استثارته للجدل العقلي ومساحته في الدفاع عن الدين وخدمة قضاياه، وذلك بسبب تركيز المعتزلة على هذا الجدل واولويته لديهم، فضلا عن دور ذلك في كبح جماع الحركة التقليدية السنية في تناول قضايا عقيدة الفكر الإسلامي حسبما يرى المؤلف.
