هذا الكتاب لا يسعى إلى تمجيد الماضي الكوشي بوصفه فردوسًا مفقودًا، ولا نسعى إلى مهاجمة أي هوية أخرى، كما أنه لا يدّعي امتلاك "الحقيقة النهائية" عن السودان. بل نحاول أن يطرح سؤالًا مؤجلًا منذ عقود: كيف تشكلت الشخصية السودانية الحديثة؟ وما أثر الاستلاب الثقافي والتاريخي على وعي السوداني بنفسه؟ إن الحديث عن الاستلاب هنا لا يعني بالضرورة مؤامرة بسيطة أو عملية تمت قسراً او مباشرة، بل نشير إلى تحولات طويلة ومعقدة جعلت السوداني يرى ذاته بعين الآخر، ويقيس قيمته بمعايير ليست نابعة من تجربته التاريخية الخاصة. ومن هنا فإن هذا الكتاب يتحرك بين التاريخ والأنثروبولوجيا وعلم الاجتماع وعلم النفس الاجتماعي
