في رواية «اُحفر العلامة»، يعيش الأبطال على كوكب ثوفية، ويتمتّع كلّ منهم بهبة خصّه بها التّيّار وميّزه بها عن سواه؛ حيث إن كلاً منهم يعيش تجاربه الخاصة التي تحمل له الأفراح أو الأتراح. وبفضل تلك الهبات الخاصة، تحوّلت حياة بعض أولئك الأبطال إلى جحيم. فها هي سايرا تعاني بسبب هبتها التي لم تمنحها سوى الألم؛ حيث إنّها تشعر بالألم بشكل مستمر، ولا تتخلّص من ألمها ذاك إلا حين تسكبه في روح أي شخص تلامسه أو تمسكه، حتى بات الاقتراب منها بمثابة لعنة عليها وعلى من يقترب منها في آن واحد. ولاسيما بعد أن صار أخوها الملك رايزك يستغلّها لإيذاء أعدائه... حتى باتت تتجنب الآخرين كي لا تكون سبباً في إيلامهم أو هلاكهم... أمّا الملك رايزك فكان يحسن الاستفادة من هبته التي تتيح له الولوج إلى عقول الآخرين، وتمكّنه من التحكّم بمصائر الجميع إلى أقصى حد...
غير أن القدر يأبى أن يترك سايرا وحيدة وهي تعاني من ألمها بمفردها، فيمدّ لها خشبة الخلاص المتمثّلة بالخادم والأسير أكوس، فهو الوحيد في العالم القادر على تخليصها من ألمها من دون أن يتأثر سلباً بهبتها المؤذية تلك، ومن دون أن ينتقل إليه ألمها. وشيئاً فشيئاً تولد علاقة بين سايرا وأكوس تتخطى علاقة سيدة بخادمها؛ وتسمو إلى علاقة إنسانية مميزة تجمع بين روحين، وتغيّر قدرين، وربما تغيّر مصير المجرّة برمّتها...
