نُشرت هذه الرواية الكلاسيكية من الأدب الحديث عام ١٨٩٠، وهي تتبع لكاتب نرويجي مُعْدِم في شوارع كريستيانيا (أوسلو حاليًا) وهو يُصارع الجوع. يعيش الكاتب الشاب على ما يجنيه من مال زهيد من بيع بعض المقالات للصحيفة المحلية، ورهن ملابسه، فيفقد تدريجيًا رباطة جأشه، ويبدأ في الانزلاق إلى نوبات من الجنون والشك واليأس. تُجسّد رواية "
الجوع" صورةً آسرةً لفنانٍ يُكافح من أجل النزاهة، وتُجسّد معاناة هامسون عندما عرض هذه الرواية، التي كانت روايته الأولى غير المكتملة آنذاك، فى دار نشر عام ١٨٨٨
