لقد انفتحت منطقة وسط أفريقيا العظيمة على الحضارة بعد الإطاحة بالمهدية. و منذ تاريخ الانتصار الباهر في أم درمان، في الثاني من سبتمبر 1898، يمكننا أن نعتبر انه تم إنشاء إمبراطورية سودانية شاسعة. و في هذه المرحلة المبكرة، كان من غير المجدي أن نتكهن بما إذا كانت البلاد سوف تخضع للحكم البريطاني، أو كإحدى ولايات مصر. إن "أرض السود"، ومخربيهم العرب الشرسين، كانت تتمتع بالصفات الجوهرية التي تضمن لها التميز. فإذا ما ساد السلام، فمن المتوقع أن تثبت الأعراق السوداء المختلطة في أعالي النيل أنها منظمة ومجتهدة بقدر ما تتمتع بالشجاعة. ومن يحكمها بحكمة، فإنه سوف يسيطر على أفضل القبائل الأصلية في القارة السوداء، وهي المادة الخام التي سوف تشكل دولة عظيمة. وهذا أيضاً كان متوقع؛ لإن القوة المهيمنة في وسط وشمال أفريقيا، إن لم تكن أبعد من ذلك، سوف يكون لها عاصمتها في الخرطوم، "وسوف تمد الى إثيوبيا ".
