الفكرة الأساسية التي يدلي بها هذا الفصل ويسعى للبرهنة عليها هي أن الإسلام الذي يعرفه المسلمون اليوم مختلف – بصورة تكاد تكون نوعية – عن الإسلام الذي عرفه أبناء القرن الهجري الأول على الأقل. وأن صورة الإسلام التي نعرفها اليوم قد تشكلت في القرنين الثاني والثالث الهجريين، بعد شيوع مذاهب الفقه التقليدية. وأن الاختلافات بين النموذجين بدأت طفيفة لطيفة ثم تراكمت ببطء – لأسباب تاريخية - حتى شكلت في نهاية المطاف اختلافاً نوعياً غيّر من كيمياء الإسلام إلى حد لا يستهان به. اختلاف ألحق بصورة الإسلام في الأذهان - وبواقع المسلمين من ثم - أضراراً لا حصر لها. في حالة تُذكِّر بما حدث لرسالة المسيح عيسى على يد بولس والمجامع الكنسية في القرنين الثاني والثالث الميلاديين . مع فارق جوهري لصالح الإسلام هو أن ما جرى في المسيحية كان "تحريفا" متعمداً واعياً بغرض إخفاء حقائق جوهرية وإحلال حقائق بديلة! . في حين أن ما جرى للإسلام لم يكن "تحريفا" متعمدا – إذا ما استثنينا الحالة الشيعية ومثيلاتها الباطنية – بل "انحرافاً" قدرياً عفوياً في جملته، نتج عن تراكم أخطاء وأوهام جزئية، مقصودة وغير مقصودة، لم تجد في طريقها جهازا نقدياً مكافئاً يعمل على كشفها أولا بأول، وإيقاف نموها في مهدها، فانتهت إلى طفرة نوعية من حيث لا يشعر المسلمون!.
