نُشر هذا الكتاب لأول مرة في عام 1899 وتم تنقيحه لطبعة عام 1902 من قبل مؤلفه ونستون تشرشل، ويؤرخ بوضوح الحملة العسكرية التي غيرت مصائر إنجلترا ومصر والشعوب العربية في شمال شرق أفريقيا.
ومن وجهة نظر تشرشل، انجذبت إنجلترا إلى الانخراط في شؤون مصر في ثمانينيات القرن التاسع عشر، وذلك عن طريق الصدفة وليس عن قصد، لأنه في نفس اللحظة التاريخية التي مُنح فيها الإنجليز، في عهد اللورد كرومر، سلطة سيادية تقريبًا لتأسيس حكومة سليمة في مصر. وحفز اقتصادها الوطني، تمرد المهدي على السيادة المصرية للسودان. و تلا ذلك العنف وسفك الدماء، وسرعان ما وجد الإنجليز أنفسهم متورطين إلى جانب حليفهم المصري في صراع مرير مع المهدي القومي الشرس، وهو الصراع الذي بلغ ذروته في مذبحة الجنرال تشارلز جوردون في الخرطوم وظهور النظام المتعصب المعروف باسم ا إمبراطورية. الدراويش.
في هذا الكتاب المضيء، لا يقوم تشرشل بسرد الأحداث الكارثية التي وقعت في السودان في ثمانينيات القرن التاسع عشر بشكل درامي فحسب، بل يضعها أيضًا في سياق التاريخ السوداني. لذا فإن روايته اللاحقة عن إعادة احتلال السودان وتهدئته على يد قوة بريطانية-مصرية مختلطة تحت قيادة السير هربرت كيتشنر تزوج التاريخ بالمصير، لأن نتيجة حرب النهر التي استمرت لعقود من الزمن ستربط بريطانيا العظمى بالمستقبل غير المستقر. لمصر والسودان.
