استطاع شكسبير أن يكتب أكثر من ثلاثينَ مسرحيّة خلال حياته، فكانَ أوّل ما كتبَه عدّة مسرحيّات تُصنّف على أنّها مسرحيّات كوميديّة وتاريخيّة، مثل مسرحيّة هنري السادس، ومسرحيّة كوميديا الأخطاء، وفيما بعد تغيّرَ توجّه شكسبير فكتبَ مسرحيّة روميو وجولييت الشهيرة عام 1596م، والتي تُصنّف على أنها مسرحيّة تراجيديّة ورومانسيّة، ولكنّه ما لبثَ أن عادَ إلى أسلوبه الذي بدأ به وعُرفَ به، فكتبَ عدّة مسرحيات شهيرة، مثل: مسرحيّة يوليوس قيصر، وهاملت، وعُطيل، والملك لير، وماكبث، وأنتوني وكليوباترا، واستمرّ على هذا النمط لمدّة اثنتي عشرة سنة، إلا أنه وفي سنواته الأخيرة غيّر أسلوبه، فكتبَ عدّة مسرحيّات تندرج تحتَ نمط الرومانسيّة، مثل: مسرحيّة سيمبلين، والعاصفة، وحكاية الشتاء لم تُنشَر مسرحيّات شكسبير جميعها خلال فترة حياته، إذ نُشِرَ منها فقط ثماني عشرة مسرحيّة بشكلٍ منفصلٍ في نسخٍ ذات صفحات رباعيّة، إلا أنّه وبعد وفاته جمع جون هيمينجيس، وهنري كونديل -وهما زملاء شكسبير في التمثيل- ستاً وثلاثين مسرحيّة من مسرحيّات شكسبير في ملفِّ واحدٍ، إذ قاما بتنسيق النصوص، وتحريرها، والإشراف على طباعتها، حتى تمكّنا من نشرِ أوّل ملفٍّ يجمع مسرحيّات شكسبير وذلك عام 1623م، وتكمن أهميّة هذا الملف بكونه استطاعَ الحفاظ على عدّة مسرحيّات مهمّة لشكسبير لم تكن منشورة، وكانَت عُرضةً للضياع. ومن بينِ المسرحيّات التي قدّمها شكسبير حصلت خمس مسرحيّات على الأفضليّة بإجماع من أغلبيّة النقاد، وذلكَ بناءً على القيمة الأدبيّة للمسرحيّة وديموميّتها،
