كان اعترف يوغوسلافيا بدولة ألمانيا الديمقراطية (الشرقية) في 15 أكتوبر 1957 جزءًا من جهود بلجراد لتحسين علاقاتها مع الاتحاد السوفييتي، تلك العلاقات التي تأزمت عقب انفصال تيتو-ستالين عام 1948م، وقد عكر هذا الاعتراف صفو العلاقات بين بلجراد والدول الغربية، وبخاصة دولة ألمانيا الغربية التي طبقت لأول مرة في تاريخها "مبدأ هالشتاين" على يوغوسلافيا، مما أدى إلى قطع العلاقات بين الدولتين، وقصرها فقط على المجال الاقتصادي لمدة أحد عشر عامًا حتى عام 1968م .
