"قصص بسيطة" لوحة فسيفسائية عن التحولات الكبرى التي حدثت آنذاك على كافة الأصعدة، اجتماعية واقتصادية وسياسية؛ رواية عن الفترة التي تلت تفكك عالم وسبقت نشوء آخر: فترة الانتقال المؤلم من نظام شمولي مستبد، يضمن لمواطنيه أساسيات العيش، ويحمل عنهم عبء الاختيار، إلى نظام ديمقراطي مفتوح، يقوم على الفردية وتحقيق الذات والإنجاز والتنافس الشديد الذي يفرضه اقتصاد السوق الحر. "شولتسه" يحكي عن البسطاء الذين لم يستطيعوا التأقلم مع تلك التحولات، وعن الذين عرفوا كيف يقتنصون فرص الواقع الجديد، ويبين أن الوحدة لم تكن النهاية السعيدة لكل مواطني ألمانيا الشرقية.
