إنه لأمرُ مهم وشيق جدًا أن تعرف سبب تسمية العناصر الكيميائية بأسماءها المعروفة: البوتاسيوم، الأكسجين، الكربون، الباريوم.....
فهل كنت تعلم لماذا تم تسمية الهيدروجين بهذا الاسم؟
عندما تتصفح هذا الكتاب تعلم أن الهيدروجين مصطلح لاتيني يتكون من كلمتين: (هيدرو + جين). أما كلمة «هيدرو» فتعني: الماء، وكلمة «جين» تعني: مُكوِّن. أي أنَّ مصطلح «الهيدروجين» يعني: مكوِّن الماء؛ وذلك لأن غاز الهيدوجين عندما يتفاعل مع غاز الأكسجين يتكون الماء.
والأوكسجين عبارة عن شقين أيضاً: (أوكسي+ جين)، والشق الأول «أوكسي» باللاتيني يعني: الحمض & والشق الثاني «جين» يعني أيضاً كما قلنا: مُكوِّن، وبهذا يكون «الأوكسجين» معناه: مكوِّن الحمض.
وسُمي بذلك؛ لأنهم كانوا يعتقدون قديماً أن أي حمض يحتوي في جنباته على عنصر الأوكسجين. وبالرغم من ثبوت خطأ هذا الاعتقاد بعد ذلك، لكن ظلت التسمية كما هي.
