دافيد بين غوريون (1886-1973) صاحب هذه "اليوميات" هو واحد من أبرز الزعماء الصهيونيين والإسرائيليين. قام بدور أساسي في إنشاء الكيان الصهيوني في فلسطين، وبدور مماثل آخر في إقامة إسرائيل، ثم قيادتها أعواماً عدة بعد قيامها. كتب بن غوريون ونشر الكثير وتميزت كتاباته عامة بصيغة دعاوية تحريضية، غير أنه في هذه اليوميات يشذ عن قواعده تلك، فهو في هذه "اليوميات" عقلاني وهادئ وواقعي، ينكب على تدوين الأحداث والوقائع، كما عاشها أو كما نقلت إليه، ومن دون تعليق في معظم الأحيان تقدم هذه "اليوميات" مساهمة مهمة لتوضيح الرواية الإسرائيلية بشأن الحرب العربية الإسرائيلية الأولى (1947-1949)، والكارثة التي لحقت بفلسطين في أثرها. وتمثل هذه "اليوميات" مصدراً لا غنى عنه للمؤرخين لدراسة مرحلة مهمة من مراحل الصراع العربي الصهيوني.
تشكل هذه اليوميات وثيقة مهمة لفهم الرواية الإسرائيلية عن الحرب العربية-الإسرائيلية الأولى (1947 -1949)، وتحتوي على معلومات لم ترد سابقاً في أي من الوثائق الإسرائيلية المعروفة. وخلافاً لليوميات الشخصية، فهي يوميات رسمية تتضمن تفصيلات سياسية وعسكرية وتنظيمية ومالية ولوجستية عن وقائع الحرب وتطورها.
