يصعب الفصل، في كتابات غولد كلها، بين السيرة الذاتية والمتخيَل، ولهذا من الأفضل تصنيف كتاب (يهود بلا مال) كرواية نصف متخيلة، فالرواية مبنية في معظم أحداثها على تجارب من طفولة الكاتب، وتعدَ واحدة من أهم المواد التي توثق الحياة الأسرية في الجزء الشرقي الأسفل من مدينة نيويورك، المتعارف عليه باسم لوور إيست سايد، في مطلع القرن العشرين، ولكن (يهود بلا مال) تقدم في الوقت نفسه وصفاً فعالاً ومؤثراً وحيوياً لمعاناة الطبقة العاملة العدومة. وتوظف الرواية مفردات الشارع العامية والصور الجارحة لتكون صرخة من أجل تحقيق العدالة الإجتماعية لفقراء المجتمع الأمريكي.
ولد مايكل غلالد عام 1893 في الإيست سايد، في حي مانهاتن، وأعطي عند ولادته اسم إتزوك إسحق غارنيش، وعند إدخاله المدرسة الإبتدائية جرى تعديل اسمه ليصبح إيرفينغ ثم إيروين وكان الغرض من ذلك التعديل هو التخفيف من يهودية الإسم، ومنذ العام 1921 تبنى الكاتب بصورة نهائية اسمه الأدبي "مايكل غولد" إما تيمناً ياسم ناشط ثوري حمل الإسم نفسه أو على الأرجح في محاولة منه لتجنب حملة الإعتقالات التي شنتها الحكومة الأمريكية ضد المنظمات الثورية والمنتسبين إليها فيها عرف بظاهرة الرعب الأحمر التي سادت المشهد السياسي الأمريكي عقب الحرب العالمية الأولى، وذلك لما أحدثته الثورة الروسية عام 1917، وما تلاها من صعود الحركات الإشتراكية العالمية، ومن انقسام في المجتمع الأمريكي خلال عقدي العشرينات والثلاثينيات من القرن المنصرم.
