إن هذا الكتاب هو عمل جريء ومجدد في المدرسة التاريخية العربية عموما والمغاربية بالخصوص، وكان لي الشرف مواكبة هذا البحث منذ خطواته الأولى في الجامعة التونسية وفي أروقة الأرشيف الوطني التونسي حين تفطنا أن المدرسة التاريخية في تونس قد اهملت جانب التنوع في التاريخ الاجتماعي والاقتصادي وكادت تنغلق على الجذور التاريخية للدولة الوطنية، وعلى مجتمع الأغلبية، وكأن البحث عن التجانس يقتضي نفي التنوع في التاريخ. اختار الباحث منهج الدقة والموضوعية، فقام بقراءة متأنية في دفاتر الأرشيف ليكشف عن حقيقة الدور الاقتصادي للنخب اليهودية في تونس خلال العهد العثماني أي على مدى ثلاثة قرون، ويخرج باستنتاجات نوعية جديدة مصدرها الأرشيف وسجلات المتجر والالتزام، ومنهجها التحليل النقدي والموضوعي للمصادر والمراجع. وهدفها رسم الصورة التاريخية لدور أقلية نشطة في الانتقال باقتصاد الإيالة التونسية من طور الاقتصاد الهامشي إلى اقتصاد تجاري مركنتيلي مدمج في الشبكة المتوسطية. ومن مزايا هذا الكتاب أنه اعتمد بالدرجة الأولى على الأرشيف المحلي وخاصة دفاتر مداخيل الدولة ومصاريفها، فجاء مدعما بالدراسات الكمية الدقيقة ويضع حدا للتأويلات والافتراضات التي تزخر بها الأبيات التي تناولت هذه المواضيع من قبل. فالمكتبة العربية في أشد الحاجة اليوم لمثل هذه الأبحاث، وأملنا أن تأخذ النخب العربية على عاتقها هذه المهمة لتخرج من عالم الماورائيات إلى عالم النور والعقلانية النقدية.
