رواية للكاتب الشهير همنغواي لكنها لم تنل الشهرة الكافية، وخاصة في عالمنا العربي. وربما كان السبب في أن هذه الرواية لم تنل الاهتمام الكافي في الغرب أيضاً هو وضوح الرؤية لدى همنغواي من حيث الصراع الطبقي، فالرواية تتحدث عن الذين يملكون، عن أصحاب اليخوت الفاخرة والمعامل الكبيرة والفيلات الفخمة، الذين يستغلون من لا يملكون، أولئك الذين يكدحون مقابل دولارات قليلة لا تكاد تكفي لسد الرمق. كما تتحدث الرواية عن عالم هؤلاء الذين لا يملكون وكيف يضطر بعضهم اضطراراً لسلوك الوسائل المختلفة لكسب عيشهم، مما يدفع ببعضهم أحياناً إلى السرقة وحتى القتل. وبلمحات سريعة ينقلنا إلى عالم من يملكون، المأكولات الفاخرة والمشروبات المثلجة التي يقدمها الخدم بأطباق من فضة، كما يأخذنا إلى غرف نومهم، فبعضهم وصل به الانحلال الخلقي إلى الدرك الأسفل، وبعضهم جافاه النوم لازدحام الذكريات المؤلمة في ذهنه، ذكريات الناس الذين أساء إليهم وجردهم من أموالهم وبيوتهم ودفعهم إلى الانتحار بشتى الوسائل.
