كان شيخاً كبيراً يصطاد السمك وحيداً في مركب شراعي صغير في مجرى الخليج، وقد أمضى اربعة وثمانين يوماً دوان ان يصطاد سمكة واحدة وكان معه صبيٌ في الايام الاربعين الاولى ولكن بعد مضي اربعين يوماً بلا صيد، بدأ والدا الصبي يقولان له ان الرجل العجوز كان قد اصابه النحس بلا شك ، وهذا أسوأ ما يبتلي به الانسان انصاع الصبي لأوامرهما وذهب يعمل مع زورق آخر اصطاد ثلاث سمكات ضخمة في الاسبوع الاول. أصيب الصبي بالحزن لرؤية العجوز يعود كل يوم بمركبه خاوياً، وكان يذهب إليه دائماً ليساعده في حمل لفات الحبال او خطاف رفع الاسماك والرمح المستخدم في طعنها أو الشراع الملتف حول صارية المركب. كان الشراع مرقعاً بأكياس الدقيق ويبدو وهو ملفوف كأنه علم الهزيمة الدائمة.
