عاشق كبير للنساء. أناني جداً، بكاء، متأوه، ثائر ضد التيار الأدبي السائد. لكنه حكيم ومفكر جيد منذ بداية ظهوره على الساحة الادبية. إنه طفل مريع. مدمن مخدرات. مصاب بجنون الاضطهاد. وهذا ما أتاح له أن يكون مدّاح نفسه وأعنف ناقد لها في الوقت ذاته، هو الكاتب الياباني الوحيد الذي أنتج أعمالاً أدبية خصبة النوعية في نهاية الثلاثينيات وبداية الأربعينيات (1930 - 1940) عندما كانت الأمة اليابانية تعيش زمن الإيديولوجية العسكرية وزمن الأصولية الوطنية المتطرفة. هذا الكاتب الأكثر شعبية بعد الحرب. وربما لحد الآن - يضع حدّاً لحياته وفي عزّ مجده الأدبي، إذ ألقى نفسه في مياه قناة شبه مستنقع مع عشيقه عصابية ومهووسة بالموت، تاركاً وراءه زوجة دون أي فلس واحد، وثلاثة أطفال صغار، وعشيقة أخرى لها منه طفل لم يشاهده أبداً حياة مثيرة جداً ولا أحد يستطيع سردها أفضل من دازاي نفسه.
