توم مادوكس: كاتبُ خيالٍ علمي أمريكي شهير. أكثر ما يُشتهر به هو مشاركته ﻟ «ويليام جيبسون» في الكتابة؛ إذ كتبا معًا حلقتَين من مسلسل «الملفات الغامضة»، بعنوان «مفتاح القتل» و«التصويب بمنظور ذاتي». رخَّص «مادوكس» أعمالَه بموجب رخصة المشاع الإبداعي، فجعل جزءًا كبيرًا منها متاحًا على موقعه الإلكتروني.

تقدِّم هذه الرواية مزيجًا من الواقع الافتراضي والذكاء الاصطناعي والفلسفة الروحانية؛ حيث يرسم المؤلِّف خريطةً لتطوُّرِ حاسوبٍ ذكي بفضل اكتسابه الوعيَ الذاتي، فينقلنا إلى عالَم نشهد فيه رؤًى مستقبليةً شديدةَ الإثارة تتمخَّض عنها التكنولوجيا الحاسوبيةُ والهندسة الحيوية، عبر حَبْكة روائية مُتقَنة تتخلَّلها من آنٍ لآخر ومضاتٌ فلسفية.
تُدار المحطة الفضائية «هالو»، التابعة لشركة «سينتراكس»، عبر منظومةِ ذكاءٍ اصطناعي تُدعى «ألف»، كانت نتاجَ تطويرِ منظومةٍ حاسوبية أبسط منها بكثير. أحد أولئك الذين لعبوا دورًا محوريًّا في القفزة التي حقَّقَتها منظومة «ألف» نحو امتلاك الوعي، ظلَّ يصارع الموتَ لسنوات، ولا يُبقِيه على قيد الحياة إلا المجهودات التي تبذلها «ألف». بعد ذلك، أقدمَت منظومة «ألف»، جنبًا إلى جنب مع شركاءَ لها من البشر، على محاوَلة الاحتفاظ بوعي ذلك الرجل المُحتضَر داخل حاسب آلي، بمنأًى عن جسده المتداعي. غير أن شركة «سينتراكس»، المالكة لمحطة «هالو»، ساوَرَها القلق بشأن المشروع، وبشأن القوة التي تمتلكها «ألف» بوجهٍ عام؛ ومن ثَم أرسلت الشركة المفتش «ميخائيل جونزاليس» لدراسة الأمر. وسرعان ما تورَّط «جونزاليس» في التجرِبة، وأخذ يجاهد بدوره من أجل إنجاز عملهم قبل أن تُنهِي «سينتراكس» التجرِبةَ كلها. فلِمَ يا تُرى فعل «جونزاليس» ذلك؟ وهل سيفلح هو والمنظومة «ألف»، أم ستتمكَّن الشركة من وضعِ حدٍّ لتلك التجرِبة؟ اقرأ الروايةَ واستمتع بأحداثها المثيرة.
