من خلال الشخصيات الثلاثة الرئيسية في الرواية تظهر جريمة قتل غير معروف الفاعل فيها، بل كل الأشخاص الموجودين في مكان الجريمة سواء زوار أو سكان أو حتى لو كانوا بالصدفة تواجدوا في وقت الجريمة متهمون بالحادثة، وهو النمط الذي يذكرنا بروايات أجاثا كريستي.
ولكن في الحقيقة الرواية أكثر من مجرد قصة جريمة، بل أشبه ما تكون برحلة في تاريخ المكان والفن، تتعرف فيها على الفنان الفرنسي الشهير وما تضمنته حياته التي أدت لإنتاج كل هذه الأعمال الفنية الخالدة حتى اليوم.
