إدوارد بيدج ميتشل: كاتبُ قصصٍ ومحرِّرٌ أمريكي، وُلِد في عام ١٨٥٢، ويُعَد من الشخصيات الرئيسية في تطوُّر أدب الخيال العلمي. وُصِف لاحقًا بأنه «العملاق المفقود في أدب الخيال العلمي الأمريكي»؛ إذ كتب الكثيرَ من قصص الخيال العلمي في الفترة الممتدة من سبعينيات القرن التاسع عشر إلى تسعينياته، وجميعها تقريبًا نُشِرت في صحيفة «ذا صن» اليومية في نيويورك، دونَ الكشف عن هُويته.
ضمَّت كتاباته العديدَ من التنبُّؤات التكنولوجية والاجتماعية التي كانت جريئةً وسابقةً لعصرها، ومن بين ذلك التدفئة الكهربائية، وتجميد البشر مؤقتًا، وآلة السَّفَر عبر الزمن، والسَّفَر بسرعةٍ أكبر من سرعة الضوء، وحق الاقتراع للنساء الأمريكيات، والتزاوُج بين الأعراق. وتشتمل قصصُه الخيالية على كلِّ ما هو غامض وغريب، بما في ذلك الأشباح، والشيطان، والماسوشية، وتحوُّل الأجسام غير الحية إلى كائناتٍ حية، وغير ذلك كثير.

اخْتَلفَ الناسُ كَثيرًا حَوْلَ فِكْرةِ ظُهورِ أَشْباحِ الرَّاحِلِينَ مَا بَينَ مُنكِرٍ ومُصدِّق، ولكِنْ أَلَا يُمكِنُ أنْ يَظهَرَ شَبحٌ مِن نَوْعٍ آخَرَ تَمامًا؟! فِي هَذِهِ الأَسْطُرِ يَسحَرُ الكاتِبُ إدوارد بيدج ميتشل عُيونَنا ويَسلُبُ أَلْبابَنا بجَوٍّ أُسْطوريٍّ غامِضٍ وحَبْكةٍ عَبْقريَّةٍ مُتقَنة. يَأخُذُنا الكاتِبُ إلَى قَلْعةٍ عَتِيقةٍ لا تَكفُّ قُلُوبُنا فِيها عَنِ الخَفَقان، وَلَا عُقُولُنا عَنِ الدَّهْشةِ والتَّرقُّب؛ قَلْعةٍ يَحكُمُها طاغِيةٌ جبَّار! لَمْ يَكنْ يَسلَمُ مِن شَرِّه أَحَد؛ لا سُكَّانُ مَمْلكتِه وَلَا جِيرانُها، وذاتَ يوْمٍ مَرَّ بمَمْلكتِه شَيخٌ كَبِيرٌ عَجزَ عَنْ دفْعِ ضَرِيبةِ المُرُور، فاسْتَدعَاهُ الحاكِمُ الجبَّارُ ليَتسلَّى بِهِ ويَسخَرَ مِنْه، ودارَ بَينَهُما حَدِيثٌ أَغْربُ مِن أنْ يَتصوَّرَهُ إِنْسان. فهَلْ ستَدُومُ بَسَماتُ السُّخْرية؟ ومَاذا ستَكُونُ نَتِيجةُ ذلِكَ الحِوارِ العَجِيب؟ اقْرَأ التَّفاصِيلَ المُثِيرةَ واسْتَمتِعْ بالقِصَّةِ العَجِيبَة!
