كتاب نقد استجابة القارئ تأليف جين تومبكنز يحتوى الكتاب على عدد من المقالات في النقد الموجه لاستجابات القارىء وفي الختام مقالة لجين ب .تومبكنز تتحدث خلالها عن الإدعاءا والأقوال المرتبطة بتعيين مكان المعنى ويبدو من مقالها هذا أن الهجوم الذي تشنه مقتصر على الشكلانية إلا أن الكاتبة تجد أن نقاد استجابة القارئ لم يثوروا نظرية أدبية ما بمقدار ما حولوا مبادئ الشكلانية إلى أسلوب جديد فحسب.
وتقول الكاتبة أن الاختلاف بين المدرستين على تعيين مكان المعنى في النص هو من فعل القارئ يوحدهما معا خصوصا متى علمنا أن كليهما يعارضان تاريخا مديدا من التفكير النقدي لم يكن فيه تعيين المعنى المهمة المركزية فيه.
