تُسمَع بين دفّتي هذا الكتاب نغمات مختلفة، ينعقد بينها ما يشبه الحوار الأفلاطوني، ولكن غير المباشر. فأنت حين تنتقل من مقالة إلى أخرى تنتقل في الحقيقة من صوت إلى آخر، من وجهة نظر إلى ما يخالفها، ويضادها، بل ويناقضها، رغم التوجه الواحد. بل إن بعض المقالات هي، في جزء من سلاسلها الفكرية، ردود على مقالات أخرى. فوفّر هذا متعة التجوال بين أصوات متنوعة في المسرحية الواحدة نفسها، فضلاً عن متعة الإلمام بما يجمعها ويفرقها.
ويبقى المرمى، قبل كلّ شيء، هو إدراكنا لأهمية إشاعة الوعي داخل ثقافتنا العربية بأهمية المضامين والأبعاد المعرفية، والثقافية، والفكرية التي تعلنها نظريات القراءة والتلقي التي تعمل جاهدة، بمقتربات مختلفة، ونبرات متفاوتة، ومراوحات بينية، ومواقف قد تبلغ التطرُّف أحياناً، على منح القارئ، الذي هو هدف كل كتابة على الإطلاق، منزلة ربما فقدها، أو جُرِّد منها، في ما مضى. والقارئ المتنوع بتنوع المقولات والتصنيفات ليس يخلو من التحديدات المكانية والزمانية، ووجهة النظر، بكل ما ينطوي عليه هذا المفهوم من معنى. إن الكتاب في انتظار دائم؛ إنه ينتظر قارئاً يقرأه كما يقول جورج بوليه أحد منظّري نقد استجابة القارئ. والكتاب الذي ننشر طبعته الثانية هو أيضاً ينتظر قارئاً عربياً ليقرأه، وليحيي منه وفيه توجهات ثقافية تمنح النسبية، والتعددية، والاختلاف منازل اندرست.
تنتقل سجالات هذا الكتاب ضرورة إلى خارج نطاق الأدب، بل إلى خارج نطاق النصّ، أو لعلّ القارئ هو نفسه من يفعل ذلك، لتشمل عالم الثقافة والفكر والحياة كافة. ذلك أن البحث عن المعنى، معنى نصٍّ أدبيٍّ، يندرج، لا بُدّ، في سياق نظرية ورؤية للحياة، والوجود الاجتماعي نفسه. فمنح القارئ منزلته الحقيقية في بلورة، وتكوين معنى يعني، في المطاف الأخير، منحَ الإنسانِ (الفرد) نفسِه حقَّه في تقرير ما يراه، ويصلح له من حيث المعتقد، أو المبدأ؛ لأن الحياة، كما العالم، كتاب أيضاً.
