لقد انبثقت فكرة هذا الكتاب من ضرورة توفر مرجع علمي باللغة العربية يعين المهندس والمصمم في مجال الإنارة الصناعية، بحيث يحتوي على المعطيات والمعلومات التي يحتاجها والموجودة في كتب ومراجع عديدة في اللغات الأجنبية، هذا بالإضافة غلى النشرات الفنية التي تصدرها الشركات الصانعة. كما تم التركيز أثناء عرض المادة على استخدام التعابير والمصطلحات العلمية سواء تلك التي أقرت من قبل مجامع اللغة العربية، أو تلك التي تم التعارف والاتفاق على استخدامها، دون أن يحدث استخدامها لبساً أو ازدواجية في المعنى.
ولقد تم تنسيق فصول هذا الكتاب وفق ترتيب يسهل على القارىء استخدامه. فخصص الفصل الأول والثاني للأحمال الكهربائية، والتي يعتبر تقديرها الخطوة الأولى في التصميم الكهربائي لأي منشأ، مع عرض مفصل لطريقة تقدير الأحمال من وجهة نظر حفظ الطاقة، حيث تشكل الطريقة المشروحة في الفصل الثاني دليلاً إرشاديا للمصمم. ويتعرض الفصل الثالث إلى مصابيح الإنارة ومبدأ عملها وصفاتها، مع تلخيص مميزاتها وخصائصها في جداول خاصة.
وقد تم تلخيص الصفات العامة لمصادر الإنارة الاصطناعية في الفصل الرابع، بينما خصص الفصل الخامس إلى موضوع مهم وهو موضوع الضوء والعين، لما له من ارتباط مع موضوع الإنارة. ويتعرض الفصل السادس إلى مصطلحات الإنارة وشرح معناها الفيزيائية وعلاقاتها الرياضية. وقد تم شرح حسابات الإنارة في الفصل السابع مع التركيز على الطرق المستخدمة حالياً في التصميمي. ونظراً لأهمية عامل الصيانة في حسابات الإنارة فقد افرد له فصلاً وهو الفصل الثامن. ويتعرض الفصل التاسع وهو الأخير إلى موضوع اقتصاديات نظم الإنارة، مع محاولة إلقاء الضوء على مفاهيم حفظ الطاقة، والاهتمام بالأساليب والطرق الحديثة المستخدمة في هذا المجال.
