نحن في هذا الكتاب أمام نص قديم، من عصور خلت، نص خاص، كتبه عبقري النهضة ليوناردو دافنشي بيده اليسرى معكوساً، لا يقرأ إلا بمرآة. وكان الرجل الكبير يحاور عبر هذه الأوراق نفسه أولاً، فيدون أفكاره، ويرد على الخصوم ويسجل المهام والتفاصيل التي يخشى أن تراوغ الذاكرة. فأية قوة خفية ظلت مطوية داخل هذه الأوراق، بعد مرور كل هذه السنين وكيف تأتي لها أن تصحبنا وتؤنسنا حتى الآن، ونحن نودع ألف عام أخرى، وتبحث عن إجابات لأسئلة أيامنا.
دفعت قوة النص المترجم "عادل السيوي" لأن يتحمس لترجمته في هذا الكتاب، برغم إدراكه لصعوبة المهمة؛ ففي النص خصوصية ما؛ فالمؤلف لم يتوقف فيه عند حدود الرصد الموضوعي للظواهر التي يتناولها، وإنما يتحرك على مستويات مختلفة، فتتضح من خلال كلماته قيمة تجربته الذاتية، وخبرته في الإبداع، وفي كتابة ليوناردو عن الفن تتجسد هذه الروح بقوة، وتنفذ إلى كافة التفاصيل، وعلى الرغم من سعيه إلى تأكيد قوانين عامة ومعادلات لإنتاج الجمال إلا أنه يدرك مدى أهمية الفردية والحلول الخاصة، ولكنه يدعو الفنان أيضاً فيه إلى التحرر من الجانب السلبي في التفرد والذي يمنع الفنان أحياناً من النفاذ بعمق إلى الظواهر والدخول في التجارب بصدر مفتوح. إن هذا النص وثيقة تاريخية مهمة حول أهمية الوعي بالتجربة، وعلى الاهتمام الجم الذي يوليه الفنان لكافة جوانب عمليته الإبداعية.
