يحوي الكتاب على 11 فصلاً، منهم "نبوءات، مداعبات، أفكار ومأثورات، خرافات، رسوم طبيعية، المارد، وحش البحر"، ويضم الكتاب ألبوم صور لأشهر وأهم أعمال الفنان والرسام الإيطالي "ليوناردو دافشني". جاء في مقدمة الكتاب، أن دافشني فنان زمانه الأعظم، ومن دونه كان الإحساس بالمنظر الإيطالي مختلفًا عما صوره، فهو إنسان بقلب شاعر، ثاقب الفطنة في رفع حالة أميته، فقد كان مستوى تعليمه محدودًا. وأضاف أن كتابات دافنشي، لا تعود لظروف عملية، فكان دافنشي يشرع دائمًا من الخاص ليرتفع إلى العام، وعن دافنشي الشاعر؛ فهو يحس بالغامض بل بما يتعذر الوصول إليه خلف هذه الحدود. وأوضح أن نبوءات دافنشي مصاغة بلغة مبهمة على الدوام، مجازية بنحو متكرر، تتطلب التأويل ويمكن تفسيرها بطريقة تبدو بها تلك النبوءات حقيقة، كما تضمنت نبوءات دافنشي وصفات وحلولا؛ بحيث يوحي لكل أمرئ نبيه الخاص لو تعلم الحيل. ويوضح الكتاب أن دافنشي لم يهتم بالرسوم والشعر فقط بل امتد مجال اهتمامه للمجال العلمي، فقد كان يفضل تشريح الكائنات فيزيقيا. ومن تلك النبوءات: "أشعة الشمس تخبط سطحا": يبدو شئ يغطي على من يحاول أن يغطيه. "عن خشية الفقر": وذلك الذي يلزم من في حاجة إليه، يصبح مجهولا، وإن عرف سيزدري أكثر. "عن االنصح والفقر" في ذرى الهواء العليا ترى الحيات الطوال وهي تصارع الطيور.
