تنهدت بعمق، تذكرت أوجاعها، تمرغت ثانية في أوحال همومها، نظرت لساعة يدها، ما زال هناك متسع من الوقت لحين رجوع طفليها من المدرسة، شعرت بالضجر، لبست عباءتها، لم تكن تدري أين تذهب، شعور بالقرف والغثيان من كل شيء ملأها، رغبة في الهرب من واقعها الأليم، اعترض طريقها ابن صاحب البيت، ابتسم لها، سهامه الفتية اخترقتها، نظراته الجائعة التهمتها، لوح لها بيده، تبعته، انساقت خلفه إلى غرفة المخزن بالسطح، كور جسدها عند إحدى الزوايا، أفرغ شهوته على عجل في عمق أنوثتها، استسلمت له مكرهة، وقد وارت وجهها الباكي بوشاحها الأسود، قام مسرعاً، شد سرواله لأعلى خصره، دس يده في جيبه، دون أن ينظر نحوها، ألقى إليها بحفنة من النقود، مدة يدها في حركة مسعورة، أطبقت عليها بأصابعها المعفرة بأربة الغرفة، وقد فاحت في المكان رائحة عرقها المحترقة بجمرات الخطيئة
