لست متأكدا متى كانت أول مرة رأيت فيها ليديا فانس. كان هذا من حوالي ست سنوات، وكنت قد تركت لتوي عملي الذي ظللت فيه لإثنى عشر عاما كموظف بالبريد، وكنت أحاول أن أصير كاتبا. كنت خائفا وكنت أشرب أكثر من أي وقت مضى. كنت أحاول كتابة روايتي الأولى. كنت أشرب بينت من الويسكي ودستة زجاجات بيرة كل ليلة أثناء الكتابة. كنت أدخن السيجار الرخيص وأدق على الآلة الكاتبة وأشرب وأستمع إلى الموسيقى الكلاسيكية من الراديو حتى الفجر. وضعت لنفسي هدفا ان أكمل عشر صفحات كل ليلة ولكني لم أكن أعرف عدد الصفحات التي كتبتها إلا في اليوم التالي. كنت أستيقظ في الصباح واتقيأ، ثم أسير إلى الحجرة الأمامية وأنظر إلى الأريكة لأرى كم عدد الصفحات هناك. كنت دوما أتجاوز العشرة. أحيانا يكون هناك 17، 23، 25، صفحة. بالطبع عمل كل ليلة كان يجب أن يُراجَع أو يلقى به. تطلب الأمر 12 يوما لأكتب روايتي الأولى .
