"ألان فورنيه" ابن لوالدين يعملان بالتدريس، وقد ولد في عام 1886م بـ"شابيل دانجيلون". تلقى دراسته في "باريس" وبدأ الكتابة واكتشف الشعر والصداقة مع "جاك ريفير" الذي تزوج أخته "إيزابيل". ألهمته شابة صغيرة في عام 1905م حباً عميقاً نجده في رواية "مولن العظيم". هذه الرواية التي يتكون نسيجها من الأحلام والذكريات ظهرت في عام 1913م. وفي السنة التالية قامت الحرب العالمية الأولى وقتل "ألان فورنيه" بالقرب من "فردون" في الثامنة والعشرين من عمره.
يصل طالب صامت إلى المدرسة الداخلية بالريف ويحمل إليها المغامرة، ويكتشف قصراً مجهولاً، وحفلة غريبة يكون فيها الأطفال ملوكاً، وحباً محكوماً عليه بالشقاء. حول "مولن العظيم" يسلب الحلم والعاطفة من عقول المحيطين به. هل يمكن أن يعثروا على هذه السعادة المستشفة ذات يوم!؟
